Skincare rituals

There are many things we like and dislike about ourselves but one thing I have always been blessed with is good skin, much to the chagrin of my acne prone family. My parents and my two sisters have the oiliest of skins and have spent much of their adult life fighting off dreaded spots and the ensuing scars but for some reason, I have the world’s driest skin and have rarely had to deal with spots, touch wood. I’m super superstitious!

This is not the only way in which I differ from my family, I’m also the only one with completely different colourings and skin with a hint of yellow in it but I did check and I’m not adopted. What I can say is that we grew up eating well and by that I mean only healthy things but unlike the rest of them, I despise the taste of sugar so barring a slice of chocolate cake in the morning, baked with little sugar every Sunday that I eat throughout the week for breakfast, I barely have the stuff.

Skin starts from the inside but rather than discuss what I eat, ill just quickly tell you that also unlike my sisters, I drink 3-4 litres of water a day, a jar of olives and a salad every day. I have never in my life slept with make up on and have depended on Decleor products to cleanse my face since I was old enough to understand products (approx 16 years old).

I don’t use the full range nor do I know too much about it but I know I have incredibly sensitive skin that can often hurt from being too dry or turn red after products but when my mum brought Decleor home for me at 16, I never looked back.

I used "Aroma Cleanse Soothing Micellar Water” to cleanse my face since way back when and I still use it now, pouring it onto a cotton pad and swiping up. I don’t use any toner after but regularly indulge in a moisturiser before I sleep. I often change them up depending on the season but my favourite remains “Aromessence Rose d'Orient Night Balm” as it is made for sensitive skin but to be honest, all of Decleor products seem to be made for sensitive skin.

In the morning, I use "Hydra Floral Anti-Pollution Hydrating Gel-Cream” to fight the pollution before I apply my primer and then make-up. I should also mention that since the age of 16, I have worn make-up practically everyday. Taking it off only when I get home. I have never effectively let my skin breathe unless I’m having a lazy day and staying in all day. BUT very few if ANY of my products have any horrendous PARABENS in them. These do some much damage to your skin and make up companies still insist on using them to preserve their products. STAY AWAY and read the ingredients. (Here's a link to an article explaining Parabens - click here to read)

But as I age, (i’m 35), I have realised my skin needs more and is getting drier and drier and have since sought the help of masks - I’ll write a separate blog on that!

Too many products I feel are not good for the skin so every two nights, I take one off and don’t apply anything before I sleep to ensure my skin is breathing at some point. If I do get a spot, no matter how unsightly, I don’t touch it. If it begins to bleed I either use Tea Tree, a little vitamin C or Manuka honey and then put a dab of Vitamin E on it when it’s died to ensure no scarring. I also refuse to do any facials unless they are oxygen ones. I don’t need someone to ‘clear’ my skin, I find these things disturb the fabric of your skin.

All that I have noted above is what I do to cleanse my skin. As I said, I also use masks sporadically and have recently taken up the use of retinol which I will write a seperate post about in the coming days.
